What is Periodontal Therapy?

The term periodontal therapy refers to a range of treatment options that you may need if you have developed gum disease. In addition to restoring tooth and gum health, these treatments also prevent tooth loss. To treat gum disease, both surgical and non-surgical options are available. Here at John Khoury Dental we offer effective deep cleaning and other specialized therapy such as GBT (Guided Biofilm Therapy) for periodontal disease which includes scaling and root planing.

What Causes Periodontal Disease?

Approximately 4 in 10 American adults suffer from periodontal disease. Gum disease affects approximately 47% of adults over the age of 30.

Poor brushing and flossing habits cause plaque, which hardens as it builds up on teeth. A swollen, red, and bleeding gum is the first sign.

Periodontal disease begins with gingivitis. In full-blown periodontal disease, bacteria in the plaque can cause the gums to become inflamed, swell, and recede, pulling away from your teeth. Further, the bacterial infection can cause havoc on your teeth. There is a high risk of tooth loss associated with this infection.

Periodontal disease is primarily caused by poor oral hygiene. Plaque and tartar can form on teeth when they are not properly cleaned. When teeth are brushed twice a day and flossed once a day, plaque is removed, reducing the risk of gum disease.

Gum disease and infection can be caused by many factors, including:

  • Poor oral hygiene habits
  • Smoking
  • Elevated blood sugar levels or diabetes
  • Family history or genetics
  • Poor nutrition (Low Vitamin C levels)
  • Low immunity (HIV, AIDS, or cancer treatment)
  • Medications that cause dry mouth
  • Hormonal changes (Pregnancy or Menopause)
